In 1832, the first public railway on the European continent was opened between Budweis in the Czech Republic and Linz-Urfahr, and extended to Gmunden in 1836.

However, the buildings that once housed the passenger station, the freight station with repair facilities, storage rooms, the refreshment station, the guardhouses and the stables are still largely intact today and some of these stations can be admired on the horse-drawn railway trail.
Stadling station has often been described as the largest and busiest on this line. Probably because of the railway inn, which from today's perspective was the first of its kind. This inn or hotel was run by the innkeeper Keim, the father of the later famous poet Franz Keim.
