The fascination of Gmöser Moor - Naturschauspiel
Soothing and fascinating things in Gmöser Moor

The Gmöser Moor is one of the few fens in Upper Austria. Alpine foothills. It was created after the Mindel Ice Age and offers a wonderful view of the Traunstein. Our tour through the enchanting moor forest and the moor meadow is a pleasure for body and soul. We discover typical bog plants and their healing properties as well as rare birds.
We learn to strengthen our health with peat treatments such as hand or foot baths and drinking cures.
Due to a shallow depression on the surface of this moraine deposit, increased surface water collected in the area of today's “Gmöser Moor”, which led to the development of the fen.
Around 1900 the farmer Vizthum in Rahstorf cut off peat on his Gmöser swamp and felt a relief of his joint inflammation by "standing barefoot in the moor". So he opened the Gmös mud bath 110 years ago.
This event is supported by the EU and the state of Upper Austria with rural development funds.

During our hike through the Gmöser moor area we get to know the geology and composition of this moor. At the moor biotope we draw mud water to drink, in the moor chapel we learn about healing history and have the opportunity to meditate.
The gigantic moor birches and oaks are ideal places to recharge your batteries. We walk a bit barefoot on the moor trail and observe what is going on inside us.
Here we also get to know the typical vegetation. We experience the healing effects and uses of trees and plants and take a taste or two.
The inhabitants of the moor, such as the field thrush, marsh warbler, whinchat, nuthatch and oriole are also researched.
At the end of the tour through the Gmöser Moor, we explore the peat cutting area. We get to know the healing effects of the moor, especially for our musculoskeletal system.
