Nostalgic trips with the historic railcars of Stern & Hafferl.
The tram in Gmunden will now continue to operate as the Traunseetram and will connect Gmunden with Vorchdorf. Stern & Hafferl continues to offer nostalgic trips with the historic railcars of what was once the world's smallest tram.
When the spa town of Gmunden got its tram in 1894, it was a big step forward and, in addition to the engineers Josef Stern and Franz Hafferl, it was thanks to the very modern-thinking Mayor Kaltenbruner, because the introduction of electricity for lighting purposes in Gmunden was only made possible by the long-term tram consumer economically.
With four motor vehicles, some of which were also set up for transporting luggage, operations on the Rudolfsbahnhof (now the main train station) - Rathausplatz line began on August 13, 1894. Overcoming the height difference of 60 m made the routing difficult, and even today the Gmundner Tramway is admired all over the world because of its gradient of exactly 10% - the Semmering Railway has “only” 2½%.
A pleasure like from imperial times is waiting for you! Take the route of what was once the smallest, but still one of the steepest trams in the world through the beautiful Traunsee town of Gmunden.
With the open summer car GM 100 (built in 1898) or the Art Nouveau railcar GM 5 (built in 1911), you will travel from the Gmundner Keramik stop through the Gmundner villa district, to the beautiful Gmundner Esplanade, through the city center and over the Traun Bridge on to the “oldest train station” on the European continent - to Engelhof. There you can visit the exhibition “From the horse-drawn railway to the Traunseetram”. From Engelhof it goes back towards Gmundner Keramik.
The nostalgia trips take place in summer. For further information please have a look here.
