Bad Ischl played a large role in the life of Johann Nestroy.
From 1845 he became a regular visitor to the town. In 1859 he bought Nestroy Villa which still stands to this day. In 2005 the fi rst "Johann Nestroy Ring"was awarded in the Lehartheater. A tradition, originally followed in Vienna, the Bad Ischl award has been given to Erwin Steinhauer, Karlheinz Hackl, Peter Turrini, Karl Markovic and Nicholas Ofczarek.There are around 140 monuments and memorials in Bad Ischl. From these alone it is possible to understand the immense importance of Bad Ischl as a spa, imperial and cultural town.
