Tourism in Weyregg has a long history that goes back to Roman times.
Our country was populated 4500 years ago.
A myriad of piles on the lake bed in the bay from the landing stage to the Steinwandeck in the south of Weyregg testify to a dense settlement in the Neolithic period; these are the remains of the largest known pile-dwelling village in Austria.
The first tourists, however, were the Romans.
The sunny location on the eastern shore of Lake Attersee prompted wealthy Romans to spend the summer in their luxurious lakeside villas 2000 years ago, five of which were discovered in the last century. The remains of a Roman harbour complex in the area of today's jetty can still be seen today. A mosaic floor with the heart-shaped ivy symbol, which serves as a model for the modern coat of arms, can be seen in the Weyregg elementary school.
